The 10 Commandments Of Being A Healthy Single Parent

A single parent's life can be the best of times and
the worst of times. . .

I have been a single parent since my son Sam was born almost 14 years ago.

Being a healthy single parent, and attempting to bring up healthy well adjusted children on your own can give you the best of times and the worst of times.

On the positive side, I don't have to answer to anyone except myself and Sam and I have a very warm, loving relationship - given there's only ever been the two of us.

On the bad side, there's no-one to put the trash out when it's raining or fix the broken knob on the washing machine.  And I can't use the retort to Sam, "Go ask your father" when the question is too hard.

But if the quality of our relationship is anything to go by, I think I've done a good job - father or no father!

Here is an article I recently came across that I thought you would enjoy:

The 10 Commandments Of Being A Healthy Single Parent

by Debbie Ciavola, Ph.D.

1. You shall spend at least ten minutes, one-on-one with each child every day.

2. You shall prepare and eat dinner together at least three times a week.

3. You shall require each child to have a set bedtime.

4. You shall find one good thing about each of your children and tell them day after day.

5. You shall give your children daily chores that are age appropriate and helpful to the home.

6. You shall set an example for your children through your own actions.

7. You shall use natural and logical consequences so that your discipline makes sense.

8. You shall never forget that you are the parent, and they are the children.

9. You shall make one evening a week special with your children.

10. As the leader of the family, you shall give and expect politeness and respect at all times.
